Psalm 23:1–2

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.

(Translation: ESV)

Explanation

רבץ (ribṣ) is the Hebrew for 'lie down'. As ever, the Hebrew is emotive and personal. This word is rich with deep rest and profound peace in a place of comfort. A shepherd is responsible for making the sheep take the rest they need in order to thrive. Our Heavenly Father is the good shepherd and we are his sheep.

Inspiration

Knowing that his guiding hand understands our needs, where might God be shepherding you to rest? The Psalmist says 'I shall not want', that's because there is a good shepherd to care for us. How might you take a moment to pause in his deep restful presence?

Application for Today

  • Take a moment now, and pause. Breath in for 4 seconds and out for 4. Again. Quietly invite the Holy Spirit to bring your mind present to the good shepherds perfect peace.

Prayer

Father God,As I pause, renew me. Fill me with your peace and presence. May I be surrounded by your perfect calm.In Jesus' name. Amen.
