Proverbs 11:11

“By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown.”

(Translation: ESV)

Explanation

This is standard wisdom metaphor. A city, particularly an upright one, symbolises strength, respectability and admiration. The wicked are the opposite and the difference is the mouth - in other words, the words we use.

Inspiration

This metaphor is about the words we use. Someone who speaks well of others is respectable. Someone who speaks ill of others is like a wicked person who will be overthrown. The short lesson, watch your mouth.

Application for Today

  • Where in your day do you naturally speak ill? Perhaps of people, circumstances or the like. Today, choose to speak words of life and be like an upright city; strong, respectable and using words of honour.

Prayer

Father God,Help me to watch my mouth today. May the words that come out be life giving and reflective of your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen
