Mark 4:39
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
Explanation
To "Be still" is not a gentle word like we might see elsewhere in scripture. Here it is the Greek word "Phimoo (φιμόω)". It very harshly means to muzzle, to forcibly put to silence. Think about someone restraining a dog with a muzzle. Nothing gentle.
Inspiration
There are waves that need silencing in your life. Where do you need to command peace? The word for stillness here is not a request, but a demand.
Application for Today
- Sometimes you need to speak to the fear and command it to shut up. And even if it doesn't, it will be cathartic to have told it to be quiet.
Prayer
Father God, Help me to lean into your authority and command stillness. Storms and waves of anxiety, shut up! In Jesus' name. Amen.
